On business trips is when I get to do the most concentrated reading. So, this last trip, I read “Six Pixels of Separation” by Mitch Joel. Good thing I also carry post-it notes and notepads because there were several things that caught my brain. Not just my eye…caught my brain and started to make it reel from the possibilities!

The first thing that I marked was how he commented was on page 32, “Digital marketing is about being slow.” How interesting considering, the concept that everything online is so fast and furious, not to mention how Twitter is microblogging on steroids.

However, it made the most sense to me. As a die-hard marketing strategist, the concept of digital marketing, social media, and online brand presence seemed to be represented by online gurus as something fast, thrown against the wall to see what sticks. I believe it needs a strategy and layering touch points to achieve results.

While Mitch Joel impresses on his readers that “everyone is connected, connect your business to everyone,” his caution is to realize it takes time to “find your voice” online.

So, when is the “right” time? For building your online connection, the engagement of your Credit Union to its members in a more meaningful way, you do need to start now!

    My two thumbs up for Groundswell which I just finished last month. And, after finishing Six Pixels, I’m reading “The New Rules of Marketing and PR” by David Meerman Scott.

    Great recommendations — Trust Agents and Crush It…they are next on my list!

    I totally agree that now is the time to get started. If CUs are not ready to join in yet, they should at least start monitoring things for what’s being said about them and get a feel for online etiquette.

    I think “Six Pixels..” is a great place to start for people wanting to learn more. My three other favorites right now are “Trust Agents” by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith, “Crush it!” by Gary Vaynerchuk and “Groundswell” by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff.
